Is General Self-Efficacy a Universal Construct?1

Abstract: Summary Perceived self-efficacy represents an optimistic sense of personal competence that seems to be a pervasive phenomenon accounting for motivation and accomplishments in human beings. The General Self-Efficacy scale, developed to measure this construct at the broadest level, has been adapted to many languages. The psychometric properties of this instrument is examined among 19,120 participants from 25 countries. “…Higher scores represent a stronger sense of self-efficacy. The 10 items have been shown previously to have a Cronbach's alpha score in the range of .75 to .91 (Scholz et al, 2002). In this study, Cronbach's alpha was .90.…”

“…As well as self-esteem, this study also measured general self-efficacy (GSE; Scholz, Benico Gutierrez, Shonali, & Schwartzer, 2002;Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995), which includes elements of both control (the belief in being able to produce a desired effect) and optimism (the view of the self as being capable of dealing with stressors). Social connectedness (Lee & Robbins, 1995 was also measured.…”

“…The higher the total score, the higher level of reported general selfefficacy. The reliability of the GSE has been widely reported (Rimm and Jerusalem 1999;Scholz et al 2002;Tong and Song 2002;Luszczynska et al 2005a, b) producing internal consistencies between a = 0.75 and a = 0.91. These results have been tested in longitudinal studies, reporting test-retest reliability of r = 0.67 after 6 months (Schroder et al 1998).…”

“…The average number of bottles of red and other wines purchased for home use in a month was recorded as was the average amount usually spent when buying a bottle of red wine for dinner with friends at home (Below $8, $8-12, $15-19, $22-26 and Above $26). Psychometric tools employed at this stage included: Impulsivity Scale (Spinella, 2007), Self-monitoring Scale (Lennox and Wolfe, 1984), General self-efficacy Scale (Scholz et al, 2002) and the Behaviour Inhibition Scale and Behaviour Activation Scale (BIS/BAS) (Carver and White, 1994).…”
