Is International HIV Dementia Scale good enough to diagnose HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders?

Abstract: Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) comprise impairment of multiple cognitive domains and cause significant morbidity. International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS) is a quite sensitive and specific method for screening for HAND, and Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS), though nonspecific, contains more parameters for screening for neurocognition. Hence, we compared 3MS and IHDS as screening tools for HAND with an aim to find out which was… Show more

“…An example of a CNS disease caused by a non-neurotropic virus is the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), which comprises of the impairment of multiple cognitive domains and is a leading cause of morbidity in up to 50% of individuals living with HIV [4,5]. Among HIV proteins involved in HAND-associated neurodegeneration, Tat (trans-activator of transcription) was found to induce a [Ca2+] increase in cultured embryonic rat hippocampal neurons, with an effect on mitochondria, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) accumulation, and induction of neuronal apoptosis.…”

“…Therefore, tackling the complicated diseases in midlife years before the development of dementia is appropriate and essential. There are many tools for screening dementia, such as Montreal Cognitive Assessment [ 33 ], Modified Mini-Mental State Examination [ 34 ] and the Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R). HDS-R, As a simple dementia screening scale and an ideal tool for screening dementia, HDS-R is simple, not affected by the educational level of the respondents [ 35 , 36 ].…”
