Is it economically feasible to harvest by management zone?

Abstract: The economics of harvesting wheat based on input management zones in the northern wheatbelt of Western Australia was studied using a simulated field of regular dimensions with varying zone sizes and layouts. Fertilizer application rates and crop yield and quality data from field trials of input management were used to estimate the gross crop revenue and harvesting costs from the different field layouts and zone combinations. As a general observation there was no consistency in the results; harvesting by zone g… Show more

“…Consideration must also be given to a range of practical issues associated with deploying sensors on-farm and managing the logistics of a segregated grain supply chain. Previous studies have highlighted some opportunities to improve grower returns through segregating cereals at harvest [2,[24][25][26], the economics of actively managing grain quality on-farm needs to be quantified at the practical level.…”

“…This procedure can be done at post-harvest in the farm using specific sensors [9][10][11]. Regarding the pre-harvest segregation procedure, it requires the collection of previous information on the quality and yield of cereals [12,13], which could be inferred on the basis of data on management areas for farmers who apply VR-N [14], such as those collected by proximal sensing sensors (e.g., Normalized Difference Vegetation Index).…”
