Is it Fair to Share? Perceptions of Fairness in the Division of Housework Among Couples in 22 Countries

Abstract: This study explores the relationship between the actual division of housework and men's and women's perceived fairness in this regard. The central question is how the actual sharing of housework influences the perceptions of fairness in the division of housework. “…From some decades, scholars have been trying to understand why the transformations in the labor market composition and the redistribution of the chores within the family have proceeded at a different pace; however, understanding the determinants of housework division has proven to be difficult. For this reason, an increasing number of scholars have moved their attention from the determinants of housework division to those of housework fairness (among the most recent, see, e.g., Öun ; Perales, Baxter, and Tai ), asking why the majority of women consider the division of household labor with their partners to be fair, although women actually do most of the housework and care tasks .
