“…After interviewing the first participants, the emerging concepts from the constant comparison of data guided the process of sampling, as recommended in grounded theory research (Cutcliffe ; McCrae & Purssell ). During this iterative process, diversity of the participants was taken into account in terms of sex, age, educational level, status of employment as a peer worker, work hours, length of employment, and work setting.…”

“…19 As with much research in healthcare services, our purposive sampling was not strictly theoretical. 23 Recruitment continued, concurrent with the analysis, but additional participants were not specifically selected for theoretical reasons, only to ensure that thematic saturation was reached, that is, until no substantial new information about themes was generated by additional interviews. 21 We conducted three in-person interviews and nine one-on-one telephone interviews.…”

“…Researchers often start with convenience/purposive sampling and then move to theoretical sampling. Theoretical saturation, the point at which new data no longer provide theoretical insights, is the criteria for stopping data collection (Charmaz, 2006;Corbin, 2009;Hunter et al, 2011;McCrae & Purssell, 2016;Walker & Myrick, 2006).…”

“…11) that are hallmarks of a grounded theory study. Key characteristics (see Table 1) include that grounded theory elucidates a process; begins with inductive logic; encompasses simultaneous data collection, analysis, and theory construction; incorporates constant comparison and memo writing; employs theoretical sampling; and focuses on the generation of a grounded theory (Charmaz, 2006(Charmaz, , 2014(Charmaz, , 2017Corbin, 2009;Corbin & Strauss, 2015;Duchscher & Morgan, 2004;Elliot & Lazenbatt, 2005;Glaser & Strauss, 1967;Hall & Callery, 2001;Hood, 2007;Hunter, Murphy, Grealish, Casey, & Keady, 2011;McCrae & Purssell, 2016;Mills et al, 2006;Morse, 2001;Ralph et al, 2015;Walker & Myrick, 2006). Although there are identifiable grounded theory characteristics, there are also noteworthy differences between the approaches that need to be examined before embarking on a study (Charmaz, 2014;Mills et al, 2006).…”
