Is low total cholesterol levels associated with suicide attempt in depressive patients?

Abstract: BackgroundPatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have a high risk of suicide. Many pathophysiological factors involved in MDD and suicide such us a low cholesterol levels have been associated with MDD and increased vulnerability to suicide. In this study, we investigate the relation between lipid parameters and suicide risk in patients with MDD.MethodsPlasma levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were d… Show more

“…Moreover, considering that both nutritional status and stress may affect blood lipid levels, the one time-point measurement of blood lipid levels at admission may not reflect the patient’s baseline level ( 24 ). Sixth, there were more female patients in this study, which may be a potential confounder, because the MDD and suicidality are more common in women than men ( 17 ). Finally, past suicide attempts may be due to depression or even a depressive episode.…”

“…Shrivastava et al ( 69 ) in a naturalistic cross-sectional cohort study of 60 patients with early psychosis, found that low levels of cholesterol were present only in the group of patients with severe suicidality. Similarly, Messaoud et al ( 70 ) found a positive association between low plasma cholesterol level and suicidal behavior in patients with major depressive disorder.…”

“…Previously, some studies have also shown an association between low cholesterol and increased risk of death due to injuries or suicide [ 2 , 9 , 26 29 ], but not in other reports [ 1 , 30 33 ], even elevated cholesterol levels have been associated with suicide mortality in other studies [ 15 , 33 ].…”

“…Although roughly 60% of all suicides occur in the context of depressive disorders [ 7 , 8 ] it is still challenging for clinicians to predict suicide risk in patients with depression. For this reason, increased attention has been paid to potential biomarkers for suicide in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidal behavior [ 1 , 9 ].…”
