Is lung function associated with bone mineral density? Results from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study

Abstract: Purpose-There is limited information available regarding the association between lung function and bone mineral density among healthy elderly subjects. We addressed this issue in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study.Methods-985 subjects (496 men and 489 women) aged 60-72 years were recruited from the above cohort. All subjects underwent bone density measurements using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and lung function tests using standardised spirometry. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was define… Show more

“… 7 , 10 , 31 , 49 , 50 Correlation between BMD and FEV 1 has also been demonstrated in the general population in some, but not all, reports. 93 95 In COPD patients, the correlation of pulmonary function and/or GOLD stages with BMD seems to be, in part, mediated by BMI, and the correlation of GOLD stages with fracture prevalence was not always apparent. 7 , 10 , 28 Although the exact reason is unclear, some mechanisms causing BMD-independent fracture risk, ie, bone quality, may be operating in COPD (as discussed earlier).…”

“…Decreased forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1.0) and/or advanced Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stages have been demonstrated to be correlated with lower BMD. [ 6 8 10 27 37 ] Some [ 81 82 ] but not all [ 83 ] have reported correlation between BMD and FEV1.0 in the general population. In COPD patients the correlation of pulmonary function and/or GOLD stages with BMD seems to be in part mediated by BMI, whereas the correlation between BMD and with fracture prevalence was not always apparent.…”

“…So far, the efficient method to estimate lung function of college student is by determining VC, which offer information essential for the characterization of the pathophysiological state resulting from abnormalities in the pulmonary-ventilatory processes [ 19 ]. Research findings have pointed out that there are many factors that can affect VC, such as weight [ 20 ], bone mineral density [ 21 ], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [ 22 ], BMI [ 17 ], hypertension [ 23 ] and diabetes [ 24 ]. However, few studies have been done on body mass index and vital capacity, especially in college students.…”
