Is photosynthetic acclimation to free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) related to a strong competition for the assimilatory power between carbon assimilation and nitrogen assimilation in rice leaf?

Abstract: Net photosynthetic rate (P N ) of leaves grown under free-air CO 2 enriched condition (FACE, about 200 μmol mol -1 above ambient air) was significantly lower than P N of leaves grown at ambient CO 2 concentration (AC) when measured at CO 2 concentration of 580 μmol mol -1 . This difference was found in rice plants grown at normal nitrogen supply (25 g m -2 ; NN-plants) but not in plants grown at low nitrogen supply (15 g m -2 ; LN-plants). Namely, photosynthetic acclimation to FACE was observed in NN-plants bu… Show more

“…Obviously, the mechanism of photosynthetic acclimation in wheat is different from that in rice (cf. Yong et al 2007) where the photosynthetic acclimation is related to both RuBP carboxylation limitation and RuBP regeneration limitation and the latter is predominant one (Chen et al 2005, Zhang et al 2008). It appears that the mechanism for photosynthetic acclimation to EC treatment operating in rice is species-dependent but not universal.…”

“…The method of Yong et al [35] was determined them during 09∶00−11∶00 (Beijing time) in mid-August (flowering stage) using Li-6400 ( Li-Cor , USA). For determining the response to irradiance, P N was measured at photosynthetic photon flux density of 2 000, 1 800, 1 600, 1 400, 1 200, 1 000, 800, 600, 400, 200, 100, 50, 25, and 0 µmol·m −2 ·s −1 in turn from a Li-Cor LED irradiation source.…”

“…Gas exchange (Yong et al 2007) was determined in plants with 10−12 fully expanded flag leaves in each ring during 09:00−11:00 (Beijing time) in mid-August (heading stage). For determining the response to irradiance, P N was measured at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 2 000, 1 800, 1 600, 1 400, 1 200, 1 000, 800, 600, 400, 200, 100, 50, 25, and 0 µmol m −2 s −1 in turn from a Li-Cor LED irradiation source.…”
