Is Pretreatment Endoscopic Biopsy a Good Predictor of Signet Ring Cell Histology in Gastric Carcinoma?

Abstract: The presence of signet ring cells in samples obtained from routine pretreatment endoscopic biopsies accurately predicts SRC histology and poor prognosis. The specific therapeutic strategy can consequently be considered from the initial diagnosis.

“…Another limitation is the absence of systematic reassessment of histological slides. Yet, Piessen et al performed a re-assessment by a blinded pathologist on 33 slides of gastric adenocarcinomas in the University Hospital of Lille, France, which was the main centre of the present study (40). There was a high concordance rate of 93.9%.…”

“…With respect to SRCs, few studies have evaluated its predictive role for pathCR and survival in patients with esophageal AC, whereas more data are available for the predictive role of SRCs in gastric cancer . Similarly to gastric cancer, in a study reported by our group, tumors from patients with esophageal AC and SRCs had a lower pathCR rate (9% vs 26%) and more frequently had positive margins (24% vs 10%) in comparison with tumors without SRCs.…”
