For this special issue, we called for articles on social work action/practice research from Greater China, i.e., Chinese societies located in the different parts of the world. Unexpectedly, all the articles we received originate from the Chinese mainland. While offering a limited vantage, nevertheless, the selected articles we chose from this offered, reveal, at least to a certain extent, the efforts of Chinese social workers in the context of their development of practice research. Additionally they report how a specific Chinese approach to social work has been constructed. Hence in this article, "China" refers to "mainland China" and the action/practice research in this special issue is best understood as describing the context of social work development in mainland China. Contextualizing the development of social work in mainland China Social work as an academic discipline was first introduced to China's most important universities, such as Yenching University, in the 1920s. Like other social sciences disciplines, social work at that time was labeled as "bourgeois pseudoscience" and was eliminated in the 1950s because the socialist government of China held the view that China had no social problems and therefore had no needs for social work education (Wang, 2012; Yuen-tsang, Ku, & Wang, 2014). It was only after the introduction of the Open Door Economic Policy in 1978 that social science disciplines were gradually reintroduced into universities in Mainland China. The return of social science programs to China was advocated by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and leading academics. They saw the need to develop professional social workers to handle the increasingly complex social problems arising from rapid social and economic transitions. Purpose: China Social Workers’ Professional Level Examination (CSWPLE) intends to promote social work professionalization in China. It has been implemented for 10 years since 2008. The purpose of this study is to report participation and pass rates of CSWPLE and discuss the implications for social work professionalization and education in China. Method: This study drew data from the China Statistical Yearbooks and the China Civil Affairs’ Statistical Yearbooks from 2009 to 2018 and presented participation and pass rates of CSWPLE in this period from both chronological and regional perspectives. Results: A large number of examinees had earned the title of junior social worker or social worker through the examination. The fluctuation of pass rates and regional difference in pass rates were observed. Discussion: The implications for improving test development and future research on the connection between social work education and CSWPLE are discussed.

This study examines the supervisor–intern relationship within social work practices in Shanghai. Recorded conversations between interns and field supervisors were analyzed using qualitative research methods to determine the key characteristics of the supervisory relationship and the factors that shape them. In a supervisory relationship, both parties co-establish a ‘win-win’, ‘casual’, and ‘tactful’ connection that not only has profound cultural effects, but is also affected by the current professional development of social work in China. Since social work supervision is a newly emerging practice in China, the findings of this analysis are pioneering and are discussed in relation to the future development of supervision in China.
