Is the 3-D magnetic null point with a convective electric field an efficient particle accelerator?

Abstract: Aims. We study the particle acceleration at a magnetic null point in the solar corona, considering self-consistent magnetic fields, plasma flows and the corresponding convective electric fields. Methods. We calculate the electromagnetic fields by 3-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations and expose charged particles to these fields within a full-orbit relativistic test-particle approach. In the 3-D MHD simulation part, the initial magnetic field configuration is set to be a potential field obtained by extrapol… Show more

“…Because there are no significant or dramatic changes in magnetic field strength, we find that rapid direct acceleration by the local electric field dominates the particle motion. Some models of acceleration at 3D nulls have shown a tendency to efficiently accelerate protons over electrons (Guo et al, 2010). In our approach both electrons and protons are equally efficiently accelerated.…”

“…Examples include several regimes of 3D null-point reconnection (e.g. Dalla and Browning, 2005, 2008Guo et al, 2010;Stanier, Browning, and Dalla, 2012), magnetic separator reconnection (e.g. Threlfall et al, 2015Threlfall et al, , 2016a or reconnection at fragmented current sheets (e.g.…”

“…The null point is connected to the bottom of the simulation box by spine and fan field lines. The Jacobian matrix, evaluating the structure around the null, has the eigenvalues of the matrix at the null point of about (2, −1.7, −0.3) (Guo et al 2010). The first positive Figure 1 shows a lateral and top view of the field lines connecting the null to the bottom of the simulation box, the location of the null (small box) and the distribution of the Z component of the magnetic field at the bottom of the simulation box.…”
