Is the cochlear implant a successful long-term solution for single-sided deaf and asymmetric hearing-impaired patients?

Abstract: Purpose We investigated the long-term results of cochlear implant (CI) recipients with asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) or single-sided deafness (SSD). We focused on wearing behavior, audiometric hearing rehabilitation, and subjective benefits of the CI. CI is expected to improve audiological results, subjective hearing perception, and tinnitus burden. Methods Speech recognition in background noise and sound localization were assessed preoperatively and after at least six years of CI experience. Validated quest… Show more

“…Speech recognition ability after cochlear implantation is heterogeneous, meaning that many patients reach openset speech recognition ability while others do not (Blamey et al 2013). Such variability can also be observed in SSD CI users (Speck et al 2021), as confirmed by the current results. Although all of our CI users were able to discriminate between the syllables /ki/ (standard) and /ka/ (deviant 1), several CI users showed difficulties in the discrimination of the syllable contrast /ki/ (standard) versus /ti/ (deviant 2).…”

“…Moreover, our study patients were highly motivated to return for follow-up visits, whereas in real-life compliance may not be as high. Possibly, non-use of initially started treatment may occur when follow-up time is longer [ 19 , 34 , 47 ]. We therefore implemented a follow-up period of five years.…”

“…Bilateral hearing could not be provided through these methods and was thought to remain out of reach for these children because of concerns that a hearing device in the deaf ear might disrupt the hearing in the normal hearing ear. Adults with single-side deafness have shown clear benefits of cochlear implantation 8 58 59 and studies are presently underway to determine the effectiveness of implantation in children with single-side deafness. 31 56 57 60 Early findings show that many children with single-side deafness do use their cochlear implants daily.…”
