Is there room for improvement in the emollients for adjuvant therapy?

Abstract: Emollients play an important part in the management of patients with dry skin disorders, such as atopy, allergy, eczema, psoriasis or dryness following chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Their use in the treatment of diseased and sensitive skin requires not only an efficient hydrating and lipid-replenishing effect on the skin, but minimal risk for skin irritation or sensitization. This will be influenced by their formulation and number and type of ingredients and, due to the nature of their application, requires cl… Show more

“…Regarding sensory evaluation, as was previously stated, the application and acceptance of cosmetics are greatly dependent on the fl ow properties of the fi nal product (Trapp, 2007). And so, the sensory properties of emulsions which are infl uenced by their colloidal structure can be related to rheological measurements.…”

“…It is well known that the application and acceptance of semisolid products are greatly dependent on the fl ow properties of the fi nal product (Trapp, 2007). Continual (steady-state) rheological measurements are usually performed in order to predict behaviour of the product in real-time conditions during manufacturing and application.…”

“…At one extreme, moisturizers designed for the broken and compromised eczema skin will demand far greater skin tolerability than an everyday moisturizerpharmaceutical regulations are designed to ensure this by way of the permitted ingredients. Replenishment of the lost lipids and NMF will be a key requirement for products designed for damaged or sensitive skin [ 104 ] . In some dermatoses, microbial control is important to reduce risk of infection through skin with incomplete barrier whilst reducing risks of sensitization to antimicrobial ingredients.…”

“…[21] Skin hydration tests, using corneometry to measure the electrical capacitance of the skin, have shown an increase in hydration values of more than 30% in patients with atopic diathesis using emollients daily for 4 weeks. [22] In an open-label study, the effects of an emollient cream were evaluated in treating patients with dermatoses characterized by dryness, roughness, scaling, and cracking of the skin. [23] The results showed that the emollient protected the has been controlled, basic therapy for psoriasis should comprise skin, adjuvant treatment with emollients should be considered as an important part of the patient's management.…”
