Is transurethral needle ablation of prostate out of fashion? Outcomes of single session office-based transurethral needle ablation of prostate in patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract: Purpose Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Compared to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), office-based TUNA is an attractive alternative as it is minimally invasive and avoids general anaesthesia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of single session office-based TUNA. Materials and Methods Data of 121 patients who had undergone TUNA was re… Show more

“…It is well known that catheters negatively affect the QoL of patients. Over a 12‐month follow‐up of 121 patients, Law et al found a 75% change in the QoL of the patients after TUNA 30 . In a study in which TUMT was applied to a catheter‐dependent patient group similar to ours, the change in QoL was found as 79% 23 .…”

“…39 Transurethral Needle Ablation (TUNA): Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). 40 It employs subordinate radiofrequency energy to trigger discerning necrosis of the hyperplastic prostatic tissue while conserving the urethra and neighbouring structures. Compared to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), officebased TUNA is an appealing alternative as it is minimally invasive and avoids general anesthesia.…”
