Is West Kalimantan More Suitable for Constructing the First Nuclear Power Plant in Indonesia Compared with Bangka Belitung? Analysis of Public Surveys in those Two Provinces

Abstract: Objectives: This study aims to analyze the public perceptions of Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan towards developing nuclear power plants (NPP) in Indonesia so that the Government gets input in choosing a suitable location to construct the first NPP in the future. Methods: The survey in Bangka Belitung was held in 2017, while in West Kalimantan in 2019. Quantitative research methods were carried out through face-to-face interviews. Using a total sample of 800 respondents for Bangka Belitung and 600 responde… Show more

“…For small hydro [41], solar PV [20], onshore wind [42], offshore wind [43], and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) [44], we use publicly available data sets for the potentials, while we use official data from the Indonesian government for the technologies for which open data is not [53] Outside of protected and natural-catastrophe prone areas available, namely for geothermal [45], large hydro, and biomass [46]. For nuclear, we draw from recent official plans [47,48] for West Kalimantan and Bangka island.…”

“…Based on public surveys that have been conducted, the majority of Indonesian people support the operation of nuclear power plants (NPP) [ 41 , 42 ]. Meanwhile, the Government of Indonesia has made a roadmap toward the target of net zero emissions by 2060 and will operate the NPP in the 2040s so that this HRP program can serve as a model for recruitment, promotion, and review of employees in high-risk positions in the power plants.…”

“…Prior research, such as that by Madeppungeng (2019), has linked customer satisfaction with project management in electrical projects [9], but its geographic limitation to Java ignores the unique geographical and social dynamics of regions like Kalimantan. Indeed, surveys have shown varying community dynamics in accepting power plant construction [10], which can delay construction project timelines. Another study by Nurhidayati et al (2017) on the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) and Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) in university building construction reported a satisfaction level around 70% [11].…”
