Isolated Invasive Endomyocardial Cystic Echinococcosis Presenting with Heart Failure

Abstract: Cardiac cystic echinococcosis is a rarely encountered parasitic infestation caused by Echinococcus granulasus larvae. Cystic echinococcosis hydatid composes 0.5–2% of all human cystic echinococcosis cases. Isolated cardiac involvement is very rare. Cardiac cystic echinococcosis hydatid generally accompanies another organ involvement, however, it might be isolated as in the present case and although rare and it can cause heart failure. We present a case of isolated apical cardiac cystic echinococcosis hydatid w… Show more

“…Generally, the symptoms of the hydatid cyst only occur when the cyst expands. Patient symptoms can include allergic reactions [24] , heart failure [25] , exertional angina [26] , arrhythmias [27] , heart block [20,28] , cardiac tamponade [21] and sudden death [29] .…”

“…After the removal of cyst, the whole pericardial cavity was washed with ethanol. Ethanol 96% does not have any effect on the conduction system of the heart but causes haemolysis; after instillation of the pericardial space with ethanol it was washed with copious amount of normal saline [20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…The diagnosis of cardiac cystic echinococcosis is based with exclusion of other organ involvement including liver, lung, and brain. Clinically, cardiac cystic echinococcosis might be silent and diagnosed incidentally by means of echocardiography or clinically it might lead to arrhythmia and heart failure . Herein, we present a case of asymptomatic ruptured isolated cardiac cystic echinococcosis localized entirely to the inter‐atrial septum in a pregnant woman.…”
