“…Second, no direct comparison was made of specific complications between the 2 groups. Although the incidence of nonunion after triple arthrodesis (12)(13)(14) and double arthrodesis (17,18) has been explored, a direct comparison of complications related to the calcaneocuboid joint could be useful. In the present study, we had 1 case of stable nonunion in the triple group, but no formal analysis was performed.…”

“…In the present study, we had 1 case of stable nonunion in the triple group, but no formal analysis was performed. Third, there has been discussion of the usefulness of the single-incision approach for double arthrodesis in published studies, with some investigators advocating its use (18), and some cautioning against its use (17). Only 4 patients in the double group were approached in the medial fashion.…”

“…Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery, West Penn Hospital, 4800 Friendship Avenue, N1, Pittsburgh, PA 15224, USA Selective arthrodesis of the talonavicular joint (TNJ) and subtalar joint (STJ) through a single medial approach has been developed as an alternative surgical option to help avoid or diminish the incidence of complications sometimes encountered with triple arthrodesis. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Indications for this procedure include end-stage adult-acquired flatfoot (stage III or IV) when deformity is usually severe and nonreducible. The authors especially prefer this procedure with severe transverse plane deformity, where an Anteroposterior (AP) radiograph demonstrates severe subluxation or dislocation of the TNJ.…”

“…In the absence of arthritis of the calcaneocuboid joint, several authors recommended using a single medial approach to limit dissection and operative time 17,31,34 while correcting hindfoot deformities as effectively as the triple arthrodesis. 2,13,14,27,34 This study has limitations due to the use of specimens from donors with an average age of 82 years. The relative stiffness of the specimens and the inadequate soft tissue release may have made the exposure more difficult although all of them were free of obvious arthritic changes.…”
