Isolated single coronary artery: a review of 50 000 consecutive coronary angiographies

Abstract: Single coronary artery is a rare congenital anomaly of the coronary arteries where only one coronary artery arises from the aortic trunk by a single coronary ostium, supplying the entire heart. A database consisting of the angiographic reports of 50,000 consecutive coronary angiographies performed in adult patients in the University Hospital of Leuven between March 1973 and August 1991 was searched for the diagnosis of single coronary artery. All films concerned were reviewed and classified according to their … Show more

“…Abnormal RCA origin and course is associated with higher prevalence of cardiac events as compared to anomalous LAD and LCX [12]. Single CA is a situation where the LMCA and RCA arise with a common ostium from the right, left or non-CS.…”

“…Most commonly seen coronary artery anomalies are as follows; LAD and circumflex arteries originating from different ostia at the left sinus of Valsalva, circumflex artery originating from the right sinus of Valsalva or the right coronary artery, and coronary artery fistulas. Isolated single coronary artery anomaly is one of the least common coronary artery anomalies and composes 2-4% of all coronary artery anomalies [3,9]. Single coronary artery anomalies are classified according to the point of origin at the right or left coronary artery, to the anatomical distribution on the ventricle surface and to the association with the ascending aorta and pulmonary artery [9].…”

“…Single coronary artery is described as an isolated coronary artery originating from the aortic root through a single ostium in the absence of another ostium. The prevalence of single coronary artery anomaly in the society is found to be 0.02% [3]. Generally it does not present any signs and has a good prognosis.…”

“…A single coronary artery is a congenital anomaly of the coronary arteries having an incidence of 0.024% to 0.066% in patients who undergo coronary angiography. 1,2) It has been reported that congenital coronary malformations are rare causes of angina, myocardial infarction, and fatal arrhythmias, 3,4) and most coronary anomalies do not result in signs, symptoms, or complications, and usually are discovered as incidental findings at the time of catheterization. 4) In this case, the patient had an acute myocardial infarction of a single coronary artery, however, a culprit lesion based on coronary angiography in the acute phase could not be identified.…”
