Isolation and Characterization of a Major Allergen from Oriental Mustard Seeds, Bra jI

Abstract: A 2 S albumin from oriental mustard (Brassica juncea) seeds has been isolated and characterized as an allergen. This protein, Bra j I, was recognized by human IgE from mustard-sensitive individuals, as proved by using two different enzyme immunoassays. Bra j I was found to be closely related to Sin a I, the major allergen from yellow mustard seeds. Many fractions with molecular weights ranging from 16,000 to 16,400 and with differences in charge were separated by ion-exchange chromatography. They exhibited sma… Show more

“…10,11 More recently, an 11S globulin storage protein of 51 kd has been isolated and identified as a novel major allergen of mustard seeds. 12 The low levels, or even absence, of both groups (2S and 11S) of seed storage proteins in pollens and other plant organs, such as leaves and fruits, lead to the suspicion that these allergen families are probably not responsible for the cross-reactivity among cabbage, mustard, and other plant foods and pollens.…”

“…Also six monoclonal antibodies and a rabbit polyclonal serum specific for Sin a 1 recognised the 2S fraction of Brassica juncea, suggesting that Bra j 1 and Sin a 1 may share a homologous epitope and that subjects allergic to one type of mustard may also react to other types (Gonzalez de la Peña et al, 1991;Monsalve et al, 1993;Palomares et al, 2007).…”
