Isolation and characterization of endophytic fungi having plant growth promotion traits that biosynthesizes bacosides and withanolides under in vitro conditions

Abstract: Endophytes are regarded with immense potentials in terms of plant growth promoting (PGP) elicitors and mimicking secondary metabolites of medicinal importance. Here in the present study, we explored Bacopa monnieri plants to isolate, identify fungal endophytes with PGP elicitation potentials, and investigate secretion of secondary metabolites such as bacoside and withanolide content under in vitro conditions. Three fungal endophytes isolated (out of 40 saponin producing isolates) from le… Show more

“…Sequencing was done on the PCR products. After performing the nucleotide BLAST of sequencing product, the fasta sequence of similar organisms along with nearest neighbor sequences from the NCBI database were download (Table S1) and comparison by online server MAFFT v.7.110 (Katoh and Standley, 2013;Soni et al 2021;Ameen et al 2021). The spliced dataset (Vaidya et al 2011) was analyzed phylogenetically using the online software CIPRES Science Gateway v.3.3 (Assunção et al 2020).…”

“…Their biological functionality has allowed them to continue to be used in agriculture, medicine, and the food sector (El-Sayed et al, 2022). They were deemed possible sources of active metabolites with a variety of distinct restorative properties, such as steroids, xanthones, phenol, flavonoids, tetralones, alkaloids, benzopyranones, and terpenoids (Soni et al, 2021). Several compounds now in clinical trials were modifications of existing antibiotic classes discovered in recent drug discovery and development programs.…”

“…Endophytes are microorganisms that live in the plant's endosphere but do not cause disease symptoms (Mishra and Priyanka, 2022). They colonize the plant tissue, either inter or intracellularly, and maintain a harmonic symbiotic relationship in all of the plants studied (Soni et al, 2021).…”

“…Globally a large population (80%) still relay on herbal products, supplements for their primary healthcare and immune boosting (Ekor 2014 ; Soni et al 2022 ). In the time of COVID-19 pandemic, demands and usage of herbal supplements and drugs are ever-increasing (Soni et al 2021 , 2022 ). Particularly in Indian subcontinent, masses still relay on traditional system of medicine obtained directly from medicinal plants for maintenance of their day-to-day life and immune boosting (Soni et al 2021 ).…”

Particularly in Indian subcontinent, masses still relay on traditional system of medicine obtained directly from medicinal plants for maintenance of their day-to-day life and immune boosting (Soni et al 2021 ). The medicinal plants contain high economical value secondary metabolites which either directly or indirectly used as raw materials for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and perfumery industries (Tiwari et al 2017 , 2021 ).…”
