Isolation and Characterization of Edwardsiella ictaluri from Southern Catfish, Silurus soldatovi meridionalis, (Chen) Cultured in China

Abstract: In April 2011, there was an outbreak of an infectious disease in southern catfish, Silurus soldatovi meridionalis, (Chen) (15-20 g) in Sichuan Province, China. Two isolates, LW101 and LW102, were isolated from kidney and liver of the sick fish on brain-heart infusion (BHI) agar and were considered to be the cause of this disease based on experimental challenges. The morphological and physiological characteristics as well as the biochemical tests of the two isolates were the same and similar to Edwardsiella ict… Show more

“…In China, minocycline is currently not approved for use in veterinary clinics, and the labelled tetracyclines were doxycycline, oxytetracycline, tetracycline and chlortetracycline (Commission of Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia, ). However, an increasing number of isolates from fish are resistant to these approved tetracyclines (Deng et al., ; Geng et al., ; Liu, Li, Zhou, Wen, & Ye, ; Shen et al., ). Therefore, it is necessary to determine as soon as possible whether minocycline can be an effective alternative to these tetracyclines.…”

“…Principally considered a pathogen of cultured channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), E. ictaluri can also infect other fish species. 8,17,22 Recent reports have implicated E. ictaluri in mortality events outside the farm-raised catfish industry of the southeastern United States, suggesting a more cosmopolitan distribution than previously thought. 15,28,31 Edwardsiella tarda is the most widespread and diverse member of the genus, infecting a wide range of hosts from a variety of ecological niches.…”
