Isolation and characterization ofStreptococcussp. from diseased flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in Jeju Island

Abstract: Streptococcus sp. is gram-positive coccus that causes streptococcal infections in fish due to intensification of aquaculture and caused significant economic losses in fish farm industry. A streptococcal infection occurred from cultured diseased olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in May, 2005 at a fish farm in Jeju Island, Korea. The diseased flounder exhibited bilateral exophthalmic eyes and rotten gills; water temperature was 16~18℃ when samples were collected. Of the 22 fish samples collected, 3 samples… Show more

“…Comparing to other studies which used similar concentrations of antibiotics, our results were consistent with (Elliot and Facklam., 1996;Zlotkin et al, 1998), in that all the L. garvieae strains were resistant to clindamycin antibiotic and compatible with Raissy and Ansari (2011) that not all L. garvieae strains were sensitive to Ampicillin. Additionally, our results agreed with Baeck et al, 2006 that the isolated strains of L. garvieae were sensitive to Nitrofurantoin. However, we contradicted Tanrikul and Gultepe (2011) who found that L.garvieae is sensitive to Ampicillin.…”

“…Streptococcosis is an economically important disease that has been reported in over 30 farmed fresh and saltwater fish species including catfish (Shewmaker et al 2007), tilapia (Eldar et al 1995), trout (Hoshina et al 1958, Eldar et al 1995, salmon (Romalde et al 2008), red drum (Eldar et al 1999), flounder (Baeck et al 2006), yellowtail (Kusuda et al 1991), hybrid striped bass (Evans et al 2000) and turbot (Toranzo et al 1994). The occurrence of streptococcosis in fish appears to be stress related with low grade chronic mortalities seen in some fish species and acute mortalities of 30 to 50% occurring in others as a result of an encephalitis and/or systemic infection affecting multiple organs (Eldar et al 1995, Ringo & Gattesoup 1998, Camus et al 2008).…”

“…Another group reported that this pathogen caused high economic losses in turbot culture in Spain (Toranzo et al, 1995). Since then, streptococcicosis caused by S. parauberis had been limited to turbot and Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus cultured in Spain and Korea, respectively (Toranzo et al, 2005;Baeck et al, 2006). In Japan S. parauberis has emerged as one of the main bacterial pathogens in Japanese flounder since 2002.…”
