Isolation and Identification of Aerobic Bacteria Carrying Tetracycline and Sulfonamide Resistance Genes Obtained from a Meat Processing Plant

Abstract: Microbial contamination in food-processing plants can play a fundamental role in food quality and safety. The purpose of this study was to investigate aerobic bacteria carrying tetracycline and sulfonamide resistance genes from a meat processing plant as possible sources of meat contamination. One hundred swab samples from surfaces of conveyor belts, meat slicers, meat knives, benches, plastic trays, gloves, and aprons were analyzed. A total of 168 isolates belonging to 10 genera were obtained, including Pseud… Show more

“…In this study, the presence of both tetA and tetE correlated with increased resistance to TET. Aeromonas populations harboring tetA and tetE have been detected in meat-processing plants (70), indicating agriculture as a reservoir source of ARGs. In the Rock River basin, agriculture comprises 27 concentrated animal feeding operations as well as 61 municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTF), together providing 91% of the total suspended solids in the Rock River basin (49) and proposing a feedback loop between the environment, humans, and agriculture.…”

“…Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has been widely used since the 1940s (Chopra and Roberts, 2001). As a consequence of its use in animal husbandry, antibiotic-resistant pathogenic and commensal bacteria have been detected in various animal products including fermented foods derived from meat and milk (Devirgiliis et al., 2011; Li et al., 2016; Chon et al., 2016; Anisimova and Yarullina, 2018; Ed-Dra et al., 2018; Lüdin et al., 2018; Wu et al., 2018). Among these bacteria, CNS can be a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (Malik et al., 2005; Even et al., 2010; Talon and Leroy, 2011).…”
