ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF ANTIOXIDANT COMPOUNDS FROM METHANOL EXTRACT OF SAPPAN WOOD (Caesalpinia sappan)

Abstract: Sappan wood extract (Caesalpinia sappan) provides better antioxidant properties than ascorbic acid. Empirically, Sappan wood is often used as traditional medicine. To support the utilization of Sappan wood, the isolation and identification of active antioxidant compounds from the methanol extract of Sappan wood had been conducted from this study. Extraction was performed with maceration and evaporation methods. The spots of active antioxidant compounds in TLC-DPPH observations were isolated using liquid vacuum… Show more

“…As shown in Figure 1 and Table 1 , episappanol (1), protosappanin B (2), sappanol (3), brazilin (4), 3-deoxysappanone B (5), and brazilein (6) were identified in CSLW. The retention time and mass spectra of protosappanin B were compared with reference standards (Targetmol, Wellesley Hills, MA, USA); five phytochemicals are consistent with those of previous studies [ 27 , 33 , 34 , 35 ].…”

“…This is influenced by the content of compounds in sappan wood that act as antioxidants. It was discovered that sappan wood contains phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which function as antioxidants (Yodha et al, 2021). Phenolic compounds in sappan wood include tannins (Kimestri et al, 2018) and Caesalpiniaphenol (Cuong et al, 2012).…”
