Poultry farming contributes significantly to poverty alleviation by providing employment opportunities to Nigerians. Feed quality is the most prominent challenge of the poultry sector. This study was aimed at assessing the fungal and proximate qualities of poultry feeds sold in Benin City, Nigeria. Poultry feed samples (starter, grower and finisher) were obtained from five stores in Benin City. Enumeration and isolation of fungi was carried out using the spread plate method on potato dextrose agar and Aspergillus flavus and parasiticus agar (AFPA). Identification of fungal isolates was based on cultural and morphological characteristics. Proximate composition was determined by standard methods. The total fungal counts of starter, grower and finisher feeds ranged from 0.10 – 8.50 x 105 sfu/g. Fungal species isolated were Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium spp., Saccharomyces spp., Trichoderma spp., Rhizopus spp. and Mucor spp. The results from proximate analysis were as follows: 36.50±0.92 - 70.92±0.51% (protein), 3.53±0.04 - 8.45±0.16% (fibre), 11.61±0.72 - 13.91±0.27% (fat), 2.70 - 8.60% (moisture content) and 3.65 - 37.83% (carbohydrate). The temperature and relative humidity of storage ranged from 33.90oC - 35.20oC and 69% - 75% respectively. Results showed that poultry feeds sampled have diverse fungi present in them. Control measures should be adhered to in poultry industries and stores to prevent microbial contamination.

Staphylococcus aureus is gram-positive cocci that can cause foodborne illness which can be transmitted by chicken meat, both raw and undercooked; consumption of which may cause infection and/or toxicity in consumers. This current study was conducted for the detection of the prevalence of S. aureus in three types of poultry samples which included chicken meat, chicken eggs and droppings. Samples were aseptically collected from different rural and urban areas of 8 districts of Bangladesh in triplicate collection method which was conducted in the Centre for Excellence, Department of Microbiology, Primeasia University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to detect the Multi Drug-Resistant (MDR) S. aureus. Isolation was done by using 7.5% Sodium Chloride broth for enrichment and Mannitol salt agar after enriching samples in Buffer Peptone water. Antibiogram was done by using Kirby Bauer Method on Muller Hinton agar. The current study revealed 68% (17/25), 84% (21/25) and 52% (13/25) of S. aureus in chicken meat, eggs and dropping, respectively. Around 75.47% isolates (40/53) showed 100% similarity with S. aureus from the generated Dendrogram based on biochemical data. Cefixime (62.67%) showed the highest sensitivity against all of the isolates while Penicillin (86.62%) exhibited the highest resistance. Moreover, 59.62% of isolates were resistant to 5 or more drugs (Multidrug-Resistant). Poultry products such as meat and eggs were contaminated with drug-resistant S. aureus which can cause serious health effect to the consumer. The drug-resistant pathogen in droppings helps to indicate the spread of drug-resistant isolates in the environment. Therefore, proper sanitation measures should be taken to ensure the quality of the products during slaughtering, collecting eggs or disposing of poultry litter.

Contamination of hatching eggs with pathogenic microorganisms decrease hatchability and may cause a financial loss in industrial bird production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiological status of a commercial ostrich farm and its relationship to the hatchery management. Microbial sampling was done from the organs of two dead embryos, cloacae of seven newly hatched chicks and one mature female ostrich, the content of five infertile eggs, the incubation room and incubator machines, the ingredients of diet, and the shell surface of 62 eggs which were laid during a reproductive season. Various selective and differential media included MacConkey agar, blood agar, Sabouraud's dextrose agar, nutrient agar, and PPLO agar, etc. were used for isolation and identification of the microorganisms. Different types of fungi and bacterial contamination were found on the shell surface of the eggs, which Gram-positive bacilli were isolated in 74% of these eggs (46/62). From the organs of two dead embryos Gram-positive bacilli, Gram-positive cocci, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Rhodotorula spp., Helminthosporium spp., and Aspergillus nidulans were isolated. Most of the ingredients of the diet contained Mucor spp. and a wide range of bacterial species. Finally, the effect of applying the formaldehyde gas was evaluated by McNemar's test, that results showed this method was very useful for reduction of microbial load of the eggshell in a high rate contamination. Comparison of microbial communities isolated from dead embryos and the egg-shells' surface showed that microorganisms in different parts of the farm could lead to contamination of the eggs which penetrated into the eggs. So implementing sanitation and disinfection of hatching eggs for improvement of hatchability rate is recommended.
