Isolation and Partial Characterization of Lactic Acid Bacteria from the Gut Microbiota of Marine Fishes for Potential Application as Probiotics in Aquaculture

Abstract: With the increase of antimicrobial resistances due to the widespread use of antibiotics, the search of new probiotics to control aquaculture diseases has a growing public interest. The aim of this study was to isolate bacteria with antimicrobial effect from the gut of marine healthy fishes and select lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as potential probiotics, being strains considered as generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA). Of a total of 45 Gram-positive strains with antimicrobia… Show more

“…This proves their ability in the bio-preservation of food and can be used as starter culture in the fermentation process under controlled conditions. Therefore, the isolation and characterization of LAB from different traditional fermented foods and products have gained research interest in recent years (Alonso et al, 2018).…”

“…Probiotics are viable cell preparations that have beneficial effects on the host's health, improving intestinal balance by producing nutrients, enhancing immune responses and improving water quality in aquaculture (Assefa & Abunna, 2018; Chauhan & Singh, 2019; Ringø, Van Doan, Lee, Soltani, et al., 2020; Ringø et al., 2020). In recent years, in order to reduce the uncontrollable usage of antimicrobials in aquaculture products, probiotics have been increasingly applied in aquaculture to prevent diseases and improve tolerance to high stocking densities (Alonso et al., 2019; Nawaz et al., 2018; Tang et al., 2019).…”

“…Besides, probiotics could promote digestion and enhance nutrient absorption by altering the intestinal microflora, resulting in better growth performance (Balcazar et al, 2006; Falcinelli et al, 2015). Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Bacillus species are among the most commonly used probiotic candidates (Cao et al, 2011; Banerjee and Ray, 2017; Alonso et al, 2018; Yi et al, 2018). LAB strains that have been used for fish pathogens control usually include the genera Lactobacillus , Leuconostoc , Streptococcus , and Pediococcus (Perez-Ramos et al, 2018).…”
