Isolation and Phylogenetic Analysis of Batai Virus, Germany

Abstract: A molecular survey including 16,057 mosquitoes captured in Southwest Germany during the summer of 2009 showed the presence of Batai virus (BATV) in Anopheles maculipennis sensu lato. Until this survey, there was no evidence for circulation of BATV in Germany. Analysis of partial S, M, and L segments showed that the sequences from all three segments were most closely related to BATV, indicating that the virus has not undergone reassortment. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship of the isolated BAT… Show more

“…Our findings suggest a geographical/temporal association with genetic diversity between strains of Ngari virus. Similar observations have been made for Batai virus in which correlation between geographical and genetic diversity has been suggested [10,14]. Batai virus isolates from Europe, Asia and Africa generally cluster independently within strongly supported groups with country-specific viruses clustering closest [14].…”

“…Realtime RT-PCR was used as described. 12,13 A total of 70,378 female mosquitoes (16,057 in 2009 and 54,321 in 2010) were captured, identified to species, and pooled according to species (25 mosquitoes per pool).…”

“…In conclusion, after detection of several arboviruses that are new to Germany in 2009 12,13 another important arbovirus was demonstrated to circulate in Germany in 2010. Thus, mosquitobased surveillance for arboviruses in Germany is important for public health because it provides data about arbovirus activity and distribution.…”
