In this study, a novel infrared-assisted extraction (IRAE) method, in which infrared radiation was employed to extract the active compounds from plant, was developed and coupled with HPLC for simultaneous determination of four phenolic acids and four diterpenoids in Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae (Chinese name Danshen). The extraction conditions of IRAE were optimized and the optimal conditions were as follows: extraction time of 15 min; extraction solvent of 70% v/v methanol in water solution, and solid/liquid ratio of 0.1:15 (g/mL). Chromatography was performed on a 200 mm×4.6 mm id, 5-μm particle size, C18 column. Good linearity (r>0.9994) was observed over the concentration ranges investigated, and intra-day and inter-day precision were high. Recoveries of the eight compounds were from 96.90 to 104.30% and RSD was below 2.5%. By using this novel IRAE method, with a shorter extraction time, the determined amounts of the eight active components in Danshen were comparable with or even higher than those extracted with conventional heat-reflux extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction methods and microwave-assisted extraction. The developed IRAE method is simple, low-cost and efficient, offering a great promise for quick determination of active compounds in natural plants.

Superparamagnetic spherical poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) adsorbents were synthesized and their selective adsorption for licorice flavonoids was investigated in this paper. The magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation of ferrous and ferric salts. Then the magnetic adsorbents with PUF shell were synthesized by reversed phase suspension polymerization. The spherical adsorbents have an average diameter of 50 µm and exhibit superparamagnetic characteristics. The saturation magnetization of the adsorbents was 15.1 emu/g. The sorption and desorption properties of licorice flavonoids on the adsorbents were studied. The result shows that the adsorbents have high adsorption capacity (about 16.7 mg/g (adsorbent)). The adsorption data of flavonoids generally obeys the Langmuir isotherm equation. The adsorption can reach equilibrium rapidly and depends strongly on the pH of the feed solution. The concentration of licorice flavonoids after desorption can reach 25.12% in the desorbed fraction with 75% ethanol solution, which is higher than the 21.9% of commercial macroporous resin XDA-1. This work focused on the intensification of extraction process of glycyrrhizic acid (GA) from Glycyrrhiza uralensis using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method. Various process parameters such as ultrasonic power, ultrasonic frequency, extraction temperature, and extraction time which affect the extraction yield were optimized. The results showed that all process parameters had exhibited significant influences on the GA extraction. The highest GA yield of 217.7 mg/g was obtained at optimized parameters of 125 W, 55 kHz, 25 • C, and 10 min. Furthermore, the extraction kinetics model of this process was also investigated based on Fick's first law available in the literature. Kinetic parameters such as equilibrium concentration (C e ) and integrated influence coefficient (λ) for different ultrasonic powers, ultrasonic frequencies, and extraction temperatures were predicted. Model validations were done successfully with the average of relative deviation between 0.96% and 4.36% by plotting experimental and predicted values of concentration of GA in extract. This indicated that the developed extraction model could reflect the effectiveness of the extraction of GA from Glycyrrhiza uralensis and therefore serve as the guide for comprehending other UAE process.
