Isolation and Seroprevalence of Aeromonas spp. Among Common Food Animals Slaughtered in Nagpur, Central India

Abstract: Aeromonads are ubiquitous foodborne pathogens with a global distribution. Animal-origin foods and contaminated animals are the main sources of Aeromonas infection to humans. So far little is known about the occurrence of Aeromonas spp. in food-producing animals in India. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence and seroprevalence of Aeromonas species from 50 each of meat, blood, and sera samples collected from cattle, buffaloes, goats, and pigs slaughtered in and around Nagpur, Central India… Show more

“…The newly identified etiological agents of diarrheal disease are mesophilic aeromonadswhich have emerged as an important public health hazard [ 2 ]. There is mounting evidence of their involvement in gastrointestinal and extraintestinal infection in human beings [ 3 , 4 ]. The genus Aeromonas comprises of two different groups of bacteria.…”

“…Mesophilic motile aeromonads are ubiquitous and autochthonous aquatic microorganisms occurring in fresh water, sewage and brackish water [ 6 ] and in chlorinated and unchlorinated drinking water [ 7 , 8 ]. Besides these aeromonads occur as the normal microbial flora of many aquatic and terrestrial animals and are proven diseases in various cold blooded and warm blooded animals including fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and other domestic animals [ 9 , 10 ]. Not only the aquatic environment plays an important role in the dissemination of aeromonads, different foods, especially, fishes and other seafood, raw and cooked meat, chicken, vegetables, milk and milk products can be a potential vehicle for human infections as well as animals [ 11 - 16 ].…”

“…Aeromonas species are widely distributed in soil, foodstuffs, and the aquatic environment, where they are opportunistic pathogens of poikilotherms, causing numerous diseases such as "red leg" disease in frogs, ascites in carp (12), and other diseases in freshwater fish (13). Additionally, Aeromonas species are known to cause gastrointestinal and extraintestinal infections in humans (14,15). Based on human fecal carriage rates, Aeromonas species are present in the gastrointestinal tracts of up to 4% of the healthy population (16).…”
