Isolation, Colonization, and Chlorpyrifos Degradation Mediation of the Endophytic Bacterium Sphingomonas Strain HJY in Chinese Chives (Allium tuberosum)

Abstract: The endophyte-plant interaction can benefit the host in many different ways. An endophytic bacterium strain (HJY) capable of degrading chlorpyrifos (CP) was isolated from Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum Rottl. ex Spreng). The isolated bacterium HJY classified as Sphingomonas sp. strain HJY could use CP as the sole carbon source. After being marked with the gfp gene, the colonization and distribution of strain HJY-gfp were directly observed in different tissues of Chinese chives with a confocal laser scanning … Show more

“…An endophytic bacterium Sphingomonas sp. strain HJY isolated from the leaves of Chinese leek ( Allium tuberosum ) showed the potential ability to degrade Chlorpyrifos 14 . The fungal endophyte Clonostachys rosea ICIPE 707 isolated from healthy onion ( Allium cepa ) colonized onion plants and significantly repressed the feeding punctures, oviposition, and numbers of thrips on plants 15 .…”

“…In this context, endophytic bacteria Sphingomonas sp. HJY isolated from Chinese chives were shown to lower the content of CP in host plants and in liquid medium in an in vitro study [65,66]. Likewise, in vitro and in vivo assays corroborated the simultaneous degradation of fluazinam, BHC, PCNB, CP, and DDT into non-toxic alkanes in ginseng roots, stems, and leaves by endophytic Paenibacillus polymyxa [67].…”

“…This species was capable of transforming chlorpyrifos to 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) [18]. Sphingomonas sp utilizes chlorpyrifos as sole source of carbon for growth, by hydrolyzing chlorpyrifos to 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) [11]. Bacillus or paenibacillus groups catalyzed chlorpyrifos through hydrolysis of C-O-P ester bonds by phosphatase or phytase enzymes and released soluble Fig.…”
