Isolation, Enumeration, and Characterization of Aeromonas from Polluted Waters Encountered in Diving Operations

Abstract: Counts of total viable, aerobic, heterotrophic bacteria, indicator organisms, and Aeromonas spp. were made at a diver training site on the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. The numbers of Aeromonas cells in Anacostia River sediment and water increased during periods of elevated water temperature, to maxima of 4 x 105 cells per g of sediment and 300 cells per ml of water. Correspondingly,

“…Isolation of Aeromonas spp. was successful, even in heavily contaminated samples, like those from the WWTPs; however, isolation was easier to accomplish when samples had a lower content of mesophilic-aerobic, coliform, and fecal-coliform organisms (Tables 7 and 8), as was the case for the DWPs, which is in accord with the report by Seidler et al (1980). Most of the outflowing water samples (Table 8), from both DWPs containing Aeromonas spp., had numbers of aerobic-mesophilic, coliform, and fecal-coliform organisms within the official Mexican norm (NOM-093-SSA1-1993;Norma Oficial Mexicana, 1993a).…”

“…Our results confirmed some previously published findings. Seidler et al (1980) reported that a significant number of Aeromonas isolates from a polluted environment were sensitive to antibiotics, including ampicillin. Conversely, Villuendas et al (1991) showed that the clinical isolates of Aer.…”

“…Motile Aeromonas spp. are receiving increasing attention as human pathogens Uanda and Duffey 1988), especially as causative agents of human gastroenteritis, wound infections and septicaemia (Joseph et al 1979;Daily et al 1980;Janda et al 1983). Aeromonas spp.…”
