Isolation of Aeromonas species from clinical sources

Abstract: SYNOPSIS In a period of one year, in a general hospital, Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from 13 patients and Aeromonas shigelloides from one patient. Eight of the patients had superficial infections, two had urinary tract infections, and four had bacteriaemia. The association of Aeromonas bacteriaemia with cirrhosis of the liver and malignant disease, which has been previously reported, was observed in three of the four bacteriaemic patients. The key to laboratory diagnosis of this genus is the routine perf… Show more

“…The reason for this anomaly is presently unclear, although the lack of protease expression by plesiomonads may be a contributory factor. Two cases of cellulitis of the leg and foot, respectively, have been reported where cultures grew plesiomonads from tissue or exudate material (141,142). On both occasions, other pathogenic bacteria were also isolated, bringing into question what contribution this microbe may have played in the infectious process.…”

“…In contrast, the environmental water contamination of wounds described in the literature frequently had more serious outcomes. Infected wounds (Hanson et al 1977), cellulitis (McCracken & Barkely, 1972), gangrene (Quinot et al 1982) and septicaemia have all followed minor injuries such as simple cutaneous abrasions (Wolff, Wiseman & Kitchens, 1980).…”

“…may be found in patients with diarrhoea (Gracey, Burke & Rockhill, 1982;Motyl & Janda, 1983), and with septicaemia in immunocompromised patients (McCracken & Barkley, 1972). Aeromonas hydrophila and A. sobria are believed to be pathogenic, especially the latter (Wilson et al 1985), but A. caviae is probably not (Millership, Barer & Tabaqchali, 1986).…”
