Isolation of Citronellal from Cymbopogon nardus (L) Rendle and its Activity Test as a Burn Healing in Mice

Abstract: Citronellal is one of the main compounds of essential oils of Cymbopogon nardus (L) Rendle, which is the most important chemical compound in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. This study aimed to isolate the citronellal from the essential oil of C. nardus and to study its activity as burn healing in male white mice (Mus musculus (L). The isolation method used column chromatography and a mixture of n-hexane-ethyl acetate as the mobile phase (20:1, v/v). The isolate obtained was used for in vivo assay t… Show more

“…Citral was found to be the highest compound found in both oils, with different percentages for CO (15.61%) and LO (42.42%). It is confirmed from the common evidence that citral is a marker of LO (Sharma et al, 2021), while a marker of CO is citronellal (Anwar et al, 2020) which is the second most abundant compound after citral with 14.92%. These two markers are responsible for the different scents of CO and LO.…”

“…In addition, its antioxidant properties contribute to the accelerated regeneration of skin cells, making it a viable option as a remedy for burns. Until now, citronellal compounds have been isolated and used for its antibacterial properties, establishing citronella oil as one of the alternatives for medicines and household essentials (23)(24). An active ingredient called Diethiltoluamide (DEET) is still found in some repellent products available in the market.…”
