Isolation ofmycoplasma cloacalefrom a number of different avian hosts in great Britain and France

Abstract: Following the original isolation of Mycoplasma cloacale from a turkey in Great Britain, only one further turkey isolate has been obtained whereas the mycoplasma has been recovered from 2 species of wild ducks in Britain, and from 2 breeds of domestic ducks and from domestic geese in France. A few isolations have also been made from wild and exotic birds but M. cloacale has not been found in chickens.

“…Three Mycoplasma species described recently, M. lipofaciens, M. glycophilum and M. cloacale were also recovered from chickens. The isolation of M cloacale is probably the first from a chicken (Bradbury et al, 1987). In chickens there was no evidence of mycoplasmas which are assumed as characteristic for ducks and gèese (M. anatis), turkeys (M. meleagridis and M. gallopavonis) and pigeons (M. columbinasale, M. columbinum and M. columboralé).…”

“…Nonetheless, M. gallisepticum was also isolated from a short-distance migrant, Uria aalge, in Germany . Mycoplasma synoviae was isolated from a dead juvenile Rissa tridactyla in Brittany, France (Kempf et al, 2000), and Mycoplasma cloacale from migratory Aythya fuligula, Alauda arvensis, and S. vulgaris in Great Britain and France (Bradbury et al, 1987).…”

“…The presence of M. anatis and M. cloacale in ducks is not surprising since they have been found previously (Roberts, 1964;Jordan and Amin, 1980;Bradbury et al, 1987). M. iowae, M. inen, M. pullorum and M. glycophilum were also isolated from the chickens but not the ducks.…”

“…However, recent reports show that also recovery of M. cloacale (MC) is not rare (Bradbury et al, 1987;Bencina et al, 1987b). Natural infections with MG (Jordan and Amin, 1980) have an uncertain pathogenicity.…”
