Isolation of Kerstersia gyiorum from a Patient with Cholesteatomatous Chronic Otitis Media

Abstract: bWe describe the first case of a Kerstersia gyiorum strain isolated from a patient with cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media. We emphasize the isolation of members of the family Alcaligenaceae in serious infections and unusual sites and the importance of polyphasic identification addressing the definitive identification. “…The scale bar indicates a 0.2 % difference in nucleotide sequences Bostwick et al 2015;Coenye et al 2003;Deutscher et al 2014;Mwalutende et al 2014;Pence et al 2013) (Table 2), and were different from the K. similis isolate ( Table 2). As shown in Table 3, the antibiotic sensitivity of the K. gyiorum isolate in our study is consistent with previous reports (Almuzara et al 2012;Deutscher et al 2014;Mwalutende et al 2014;Pence et al 2013), except for several antimicrobial agents of the isolate C (Bostwick et al 2015). It is not surprising since different strains of the same bacterial species can have different antibiotic sensitivity.…”

“…This phenotype appears to be characteristic of K. gyiorum. The biochemical characteristics of our isolate matched with other K. gyiorum isolates (Almuzara et al 2012; Fig. 3 Phylogenetic tree based on gyrB gene sequences of Kerstersia gyiorum and K. similis.…”

“…The isolate tested as susceptible to cefepime (Յ4 g/ml), gentamicin (Յ2 g/ml), meropenem (Յ1 g/ml), piperacillin-tazobactam (Յ16 g/ml), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Յ0.5 g/ml) and intermediate to ciprofloxacin (2 g/ml). The patient was treated with 500 mg ciprofloxacin orally, twice daily for 10 days, based on case reports demonstrating susceptibility of K. gyiorum isolates to ciprofloxacin (5,6). Subsequently, an Etest battery was performed on both isolates for comparison between the two institutions (7) ( Table 1).…”
