Isolation of Leptospira noguchii from sheep

Abstract: The main goal of this study was to obtain new isolates of Leptospira spp. from sheep. A total of ten kidney samples and 44 blood samples were collected from sheep slaughtered in Pelotas, Southern Brazil. One isolate was obtained which was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and serogrouping to be Leptospira noguchii serogroup Autumnalis. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) evaluation revealed that 4.5% of the sheep sera reacted against the Autumnalis serogroup. This is the first report of isolation of L. n… Show more

“…Serovar Javanica, the most frequently detected in the present study with significant titers, has previously been described in a prevalence survey in southern Brazil (SILVA et al, 2007). However, it has never been described in small ruminants in Northeast Brazil, according to recent surveys (HIGINO et al, 2010;ALVES et al, 2012;HIGINO et al, 2012).…”

“…Abattoirs are considered an excellent source for collecting samples for surveillance of several infectious diseases, and several studies on leptospiral isolation have previously been conducted there (SILVA et al, 2007; al., 2010). Leptospira spp.…”

“…Worldwide, the reported prevalence of leptospirosis in sheep has been comparatively low in Canada, 16 Portugal, 17 Chile, 18 Italy, 19 and Brazil. 20 However, Ciceroni and others 19 claimed that carrier sheep in Italy had atypical serovars (e.g., serovar Poi) that have not been looked for in this study and rarely elsewhere.…”

“…noguchii is a pathogenic species present in the American continent and has been recently reported in the South of Brazil [38]. It had been previously isolated from human, armadillo, toad, spiny rat, opossum, nutria, Mustela nivalis, cattle and sheep, showing a wide variety of domestic and wild hosts [2,38,39].…”

“…In this case it is accepted that avirulent leptospires may colonize renal tissues of mammalian hosts [40,41]. Similarly, we have previously isolated the L. noguchii strain Caco from an asymptomatic sheep that failed to cause disease in the hamster model [38]. The lack of virulence in these strains precludes their use in immunoprotection experiments.…”
