“…The first case of Lyme borreliosis in Japan was reported in Nagano prefecture in 1987 (12). B. burgdorferi was isolated from two species of ixodid ticks, Ixodes persulcatus (15) three isolates showed similar SDS-PAGE profiles to that of strains B31 (6) and P/Bi (16) isolated from I. dammini in North America and from the cereborspinal fluid (CSF) of a patient in Germany, respectively. The Shizuoka isolates had 60 kDa antigen, flagellin (41 kDa), outer surface protein B (Osp B, 34 kDa), and Osp A (29 kDa) as predominate antigens, but the molecular mass of Osp B of Shizuoka isolates was different from that of strain B31 (32 kDa).…”

“…Lyme borreliosis in Japan was first reported in 1987 (15) and B. burgdorferi sensu lato was isolated from I. persulcatus, I. ovatus, wild rodents (20)(21)(22)(23)28) and patients (24) in Japan. The borrelial strains isolated from I. ovatus belonging to the subgenus partipalpiger were homologous in protein profile and reactivity with genus specific monoclonal antibody H5332 (5) to outer surface protein A (OspA) in contrast with the isolates from I. persulcatus belonging to the the subgenus ixodes (23).…”

“…burgdorferi sensu lato was isolated from ixodid ticks, I. persulcatus (20,24), I. ovatus (19,20,25), other ixodid ticks (28), wood mouse (Apodemus speciosus ainu; 24), long-tailed shrew (Sorex unguiculatus; 30) and patients with erythema migrans (EM; 26) in Japan. Interestingly, isolates from I. ovatus were homologous with respect to the molecular weight of Osp A (27), and RFLP in 23S rRNA gene (31).…”
