“…The implication of HTLV-IIl as the causative agent was based primarily on the high correlation between development of disease and prior exposure to virus, evidenced by the isolation of virus (1,2) and the detection of antibodies to viral proteins in patient sera (3,4,7). Furthermore, the in vitro effect of HTLV-III on immunologically active normal lymphocytes was found to be consistent with the hematological status of patients observed during the course of disease (1,2,8,9). Here we describe the isolation of infectious virus from 47 AIDS patients, 35 AIDS-related-complex (ARC) patients, and 19 clinically healthy donors at risk for AIDS.…”

“…HTLV type II (HTLV-II) has been isolated from a single patient with T-cell hairy cell leukemia (8). Recently, a third HTLV type (HTLV-III) (9,10), similar or identical to the lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) (11,12), has been isolated from >35% of patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The finding of antibodies reactive with HTLV-III in 88% of affected individuals has suggested that this virus is requisite for the evolution of this disorder (13).…”

“…In vitro, HTLV-I and HTLV-II infection transforms these T4 cells (14)(15)(16)(17), whereas infection with HTLV-III (or LAV) produces cytopathic effects and cell death (9,12). In vivo, the malignant cells from patients with ATLL and the patient with T-cell hairy cell leukemia are T4 cells (8,15,18,19), and in patients with fully developed AIDS the number of circulating T4 cells is profoundly reduced (20,21).…”

“…The first case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in a French haemophiliac was reported by Vilmer et al (1) and allowed the isolation of a virus now considered to be the aetiological agent of the disease. We report the second cast!…”
