“…The apparently high prevalence of reovirus infections in psittacines and other birds in quarantine is consistent with the findings of Graham (1986). Reoviruses have been associated with clinical disease in parrots showing hepatic lesions on post-mortem (Meulemans et al, 1983;Ashton et al, 1984;Graham, 1986), but in only one of the cases in the present study was the isolate made from a parrot with hepatitis. Eleven avian reovirus serotypes have been described (Wood et al, 1980) but because of the lack of correlation with disease it was not considered worthwhile serotyping the reoviruses isolated in the present study.…”

“…The disease that we have reported in the African grey parrots of shipment B is similar to the episodes described in previous reports (Meulemans et al, 1983;Ashton et al, 1984;Clubb, 1984;Wilson et al, 1985;Graham, 1987). In those outbreaks, reovirusassociated necrotizing hepatitis was the major necropsy finding, although other secondary pathogens were often present.…”

“…Viral infections as well as stress factors are thought to be an important cause of mortality in birds in quarantine (Meulemans et al, 1983;Graham, 1987). Almost one-half (39 out of 84) of the birds examined in this study had a known history of introduction of new birds.…”
