“…Finally, 14% of people born in those years were not vaccinated at all; however, they were included for analyses because it was not possible to identify them for exclusion (Geissler, 1990). The second group (1962 ± 1964),`most of whom received SV40-free vaccines', included people who received SV40-contaminated vaccines, since these vaccines were distributed until 1963 (Geissler, 1990;Shah and Nathanson, 1976 (Weiner et al, 1972;Soriano et al, 1974;Weiss et al, 1975;Krieg et al, 1981;Walsh et al, 1982;Stoian et al, 1984). However, the limited technology available at that time made it di cult to reproduce the ®ndings and to obtain de®nitive results.…”

“…Southern blots with weak bands were published, and the immuno¯uorescence data were questioned because of a possible cross-reaction with Tags from other DNA tumor viruses (i.e., BK and JC viruses). In those instances in which SV40 virus had been recovered from human specimens (Weiner et al, 1972;Soriano et al, 1974;Krieg et al, 1981) the ®ndings were verbally questioned as possible laboratory contamination, even if no evidence of contamination existed. At the NIH conference, Strickler, 1997, reported that the incidence of tumors, including ependymomas, and osteosarcomas has not increased since 1973 when the SEER data became available (SEER, Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results, is a program of the National Cancer Institute to collect data on cancer patients on a routine basis.…”

“…Viruses morphologically indistinguishable from papovavirus have been isolated from man [1,5,8,12]. One of these, BK virus, was isolated from a kidney transplant patient [1,5].…”

“…Active infection with BK virus was shown to occur in 38% of patients with such transplants [1]. Furthermore, BK virus antibody was found to be common in humans in England [4], the United States [10][11][12], and Japan (Taguchi et al, unpublished data). Although the potential oncogenicity of BK virus has been demonstrated in vitro [7], the etiological significance of this virus in man remains uncertain.…”

“…Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy was felt to be paraneoplastic in the past, but a viral cause was later established. 5 Further characterization and understanding of the paraneoplastic syndromes are important for several reasons. At times the syndrome is the major clinical problem requiring attention, and appropriate palliative management may be important for the quality and duration of patient survival.…”
