Isothermal Titration Calorimetry of Chiral Polymeric Nanoparticles

Abstract: Chiral polymeric nanoparticles are of prime importance, mainly due to their enantioselective potential, for many applications such as catalysis and chiral separation in chromatography. In this article we report on the preparation of chiral polymeric nanoparticles by miniemulsion polymerization. In addition, we describe the use of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) to measure the chiral interactions and the energetics of the adsorption of enantiomers from aqueous solutions onto chiral polymeric nanoparticle… Show more

“…The original spectrum of the isothermal titration thermometer reflects the change in heat. The upward peak indicates a heat-releasing reaction, and the downward peak indicates a heat-absorbing reaction [ 41 , 42 ]. When CHP, CHAP, and CHSP NPs were titrated with HSA, the released heat from the combination gradually decreased over time (Fig.…”

“…The adsorbed number of HSA molecules is related to the hydrophobicity of NPs. The greater the degree of substitution of hydrophobicity, the more HSA is adsorbed [ 41 ]. The cholesterol substitutions of the three NPs were the same, and the number of HSA molecules adsorbed by positively charged NPs was the highest, so the adsorption of NPs and HSA was related to the hydrophobicity and surface charge of the NPs.…”

“…A set of poly-N-acryl-L/Damino acid methyl ester nanoparticles was prepared by free radical polymerization in a miniemulsion system. 67,68 We tested poly-N-acryl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester nanoparticles by ITC at 30°C with three amino acids as chiral probe solutions; D/L-phenylalanine, D/L-serine, and D/L-valine. The first chiral probe solution, D-and Lphenylalanine, showed an enantioselectivity of~1.23 where D-phenylalanine adsorbed better to the chiral polymeric nanoparticles (Figure 13).…”
