Introduction This study examines experiences with a family planning segmentation counseling tool that is used during the provision of family planning services. Based on answers to a series of questions, women are segmented into one of five categories of family planning users and counseled based on their identified segment. This study aimed to qualitatively assess provider perspectives on implementation of the tool. Methods Semi-structured in-depth interviews took place in the Dosso region of Niger among 16 family planning providers who had been trained in segmentation and were currently using the segmentation tool. The facilities chosen for interviews were part of a larger mixed methods study assessing the impact of using the segmentation approach. Interview questions focused on training, supervision, how segmentation occurs at the health facility, how segmentation changes provider–client interactions, and any difficulties faced with implementation. Interviews were translated and transcribed into French and data were coded and thematically analyzed. Results All providers in the study reported positive outcomes associated with segmentation. While providers acknowledged that the segmentation approach added time to the clinic visit, they did see the benefit of this extra time in providing more meaningful interactions between clients and providers, leaving clients with a deeper understanding of family planning and of the different methods available. The implementation of the tool did not change other aspects of service delivery, except that a segmentation sheet was required to be filled in and kept in each patient’s file. Difficulties reported included translating the segmentation tool questions into local languages, training enough health care providers and avoiding stock outs of the segmentation sheets. Conclusion The segmentation process is of benefit to family planning clients in Niger and the scale-up of the strategy could bring higher quality services to women. If this approach is brought to scale the implementation challenges uncovered need to be addressed, especially adequate training. Further research is needed to determine if segmentation leads to changes in family planning use outcomes.

Dalam kebijakan pelayanan KB ditemukan beberapa permasalahan, salah satunya adalah kepesertaan Metode Kontrasepsi Jangka Panjang (MKJP) rendah. Berdasarkan hasil survey RPJMN tahun 2018, KB pasca persalinan MKJP di Jawa Barat mencapai 16,55%, di kota Bandung mencapai 20%. Hal tersebut disebabkan belum optimalnya konseling sebagai sarana Komunikasi Informasi dan Edukasi. Kemenkes dan BKKBN telah berupaya untuk meningkatkan kepesertaan KB MKJP dengan menerapkan Strategi Konseling Berimbang (SKB). Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui adanya hubungan pemberian SKB terhadap ibu hamil trimester III dengan pemilihan KB pasca persalinan MKJP. Penelitian menggunakan metode kuantitatif observasional analitik dengan desain penelitian studi cross sectional. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan accidental sampling dengan responden 58 orang. Analisa data menggunakan teknik uji Chi Square. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan hasil penilaian responden terhadap pemberian SKB sebagian besar menyatakan “baik” sebesar 69%, responden yang memilih KB pasca persalinan MKJP sebesar 60,3%. Berdasarkan analisi bivariat Chi-square diperoleh hasil p value = 0,004 kurang dari 0,05. Simpulan hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara hubungan Strategi Konseling Berimbang (SKB) pada ibu hamil trimester III dengan pemilihan KB pasca persalinan Metode Kontrasepsi Jangka Panjang (MKJP) di UPT Puskesmas Sukarasa tahun 2021.

BACKGROUND: Fertility is contributed to the high birth rate, mortality, and migration. One effort to control the birth rate is through the family planning program, using contraceptives by couples of childbearing age. The family planning program regulates the distance between mothers’ pregnancies, prevents early or late age pregnancies, has quality reproductive health, and reduces maternal mortality. AIM: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the balanced family planning counseling strategy (BFP-CS) educational model on changes in postpartum contraception behavior in pregnant women. METHODS: The research used a quasi-experiment design with a non-randomized pre-test and post-test design, with a control group design. The study consisted of one intervention group (Talise Public Health) and one control group (Singgani Public Health), Palu city, with a purposive sampling technique of 43 respondents per group. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate. RESULTS: The results showed that there was a significant improvement in knowledge (p = 0.00), attitude (p = 0.00), intention (p = 0.00), and the use of postpartum contraceptives (p = 0.00) before and after treatment. A significant difference was revealed between intervention and control groups on knowledge (p = 0.036), attitude (p = 0.01), intention (p = 0.00), and the use of postpartum contraceptives (p = 0.00). CONCLUSIONS: Implementing the educational model of the BFP-CS could be an effective solution to improve knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and the use of postpartum contraceptives compared to the usual counseling method.
