‘It really has made me think’: Exploring how informal STEM learning practitioners developed critical reflective practice for social justice using the Equity Compass tool

Abstract: Critical reflective practice is a foundation of socially just pedagogy. This paper focuses on the informal STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) learning sector, where there is an acute shortage of support for critical reflective practice despite long-standing, entrenched issues of inequity. We analyse how practitioners used a new reflective tool, the Equity Compass, co-developed by researchers and practitioners through a five-year partnership. We report on multimodal qualitative data (interviews,… Show more

“…2. Explicitly addressing equity issues in STEM teacher education: Since pre-service teachers are susceptible to gender-stereotyped attitudes, it is advisable to openly discuss and reflect on equity matters during training sessions (Archer et al, 2022;Chowdhuri et al, 2023). “…Teachers should consistently assess student learning outcomes, adapt learning methods, and seek professional development opportunities to enhance their teaching skills in STEM. Reflection plays a crucial role in deepening knowledge about STEM issues, evaluating pedagogical practices, including inclusivity, and improving STEM learning planning (Archer et al, 2022;ElSayary, 2021;Sahin & Top, 2015). By implementing effective pedagogy, educators can better prepare students for success in the STEM field, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in STEM education and learning.…”

“…Research methods that incorporate elements of reflective practice are key to developing socially just research projects [Dawson, 2014;Archer, Godec, Patel, Dawson & Calabrese Barton, 2023]. The power of diary-based methods is not only that they can provide a more equitable way of interpreting experiences, but those experiences can also be understood in the changing context of the day-to-day challenges that science communication professionals may encounter [Gable & Reis, 1999].…”
