Solidarity amongst member states, one of the European Union's fundamental values, has recently been put to the test by numerous and diverse challenges that have led to a "crisis of solidarity". In the UK, the decision in June 2016 by the electorate to vote to leave the European Union revealed the British dimension of this crisis. However, little is known about the perceptions of other European citizens on this decision, even though it has contributed towards shaping the present and future of the European Union. In this paper, using a representative survey conducted in eight European Countries including the UK, we aim to explore and contrast crosscountry evidence on individual perceptions on Brexit. We then aim to establish if an association exists between opinions on Brexit and individual solidaristic attitudes and concrete behaviours of survey respondents. The complex relationship between opinions on this event and expressions of solidarity at different levels (local, national, European and beyond) will be explored using multivariate regression techniques as well as the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of survey respondents.

Prior to the 2008 financial crisis, politicians famously told the public and themselves that ‘there is no alternative’ to a neoliberal economic paradigm. Fast‐forward to 2019 and there is, instead, the sense that ‘maybe there are alternatives’. However, when many observers and commentators look back to the 2008 crisis, they see a general continuity with what went before. In order to gain a better understanding of this ‘interregnum’, we map five sets of ideas and practices that challenge the policies, ideas, and conventions of pre‐crash orthodoxy. In doing so, we argue that there has been a fundamental transformation in legitimate public discourse about the economy since 2008: ideas and practices that were previously unimaginable or illegitimate in mainstream economic debate are now commonplace. Although this does not represent a ‘paradigm shift’, it represents significant political change that is important to understand and interrogate on its own terms.
