Iterative Development of a Tailored mHealth Intervention for Adolescent and Young Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer

Abstract: The authors are grateful to the many childhood cancer survivors and their families who participated. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the scientific advisory committee who provided feedback and our collaborator LifeScience Technologies. “…It is also possible that multicomponent interventions, incorporating texting with other platforms such as mobile apps, combined with behavioral economic incentives and self‐monitoring could further increase acceptability and efficacy. A RCT is underway that addresses some of these next steps . In sum, tailored text messaging is well‐received by AYA and may impact outcomes such as health knowledge, well‐being, and engagement in healthy behaviors, especially for AYA survivors that may be asymptomatic yet have increasing health vulnerabilities.…”

“…The study was IRB‐approved from the two study sites—a pediatric cancer center and the partnering adult academic cancer center—and was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03363711). Details of the intervention development were previously reported 2 . Informed consent was obtained from AYA or from parent/guardian (for AYA <18 years old).…”

“…The goal of this efficacy trial was to test the impact of the app and the SCP on self‐management versus delivery of an SCP alone, via a randomized controlled trial (RCT) known as AYA self‐management via texting, education & plans for survivors (AYA STEPS). While we previously reported on the intervention development, 2 and with longer term efficacy outcomes pending, we aim to provide generalizable knowledge on feasibility and acceptability of this digital health RCT to improve self‐management of AYA survivors.…”
