Iterative prototyping based on lessons learned from the falloposcope in vivo pilot study experience

Abstract: High grade serous ovarian cancer is the most deadly gynecological cancer, and it is now believed that most cases originate in the fallopian tubes (FTs). Early detection of ovarian cancer could double the 5-year survival rate compared with late-stage diagnosis. Autofluorescence imaging can detect serous-origin precancerous and cancerous lesions in ex vivo FT and ovaries with good sensitivity and specificity. Multispectral fluorescence imaging (MFI) can differentiate healthy, benign, and malignant ovarian and FT… Show more

“…OCT is advantageous over traditional microscopy techniques because it provides additional structural depth information, a relatively large field of view, and does not require exogeneous contrast agents. Moreover, OCT can be implemented as a miniature (<1 mm) fiber optic probe and is ideally suited to simultaneously assess structure and function of the fallopian tubes in vivo 5 . The ability to detect impaired cilia dynamics in vivo has broad implications for our current understanding of normal reproductive physiology as well as pathology linked to altered CBF, such as endometriosis and infertility 6,7 .…”
