IUCN Red List of Threatened Primate Species

Abstract: The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is currently the most comprehensive source of data on the global conservation status of animal, fungi, and plant taxa. The Primate Specialist Group (PSG), part of IUCN’s SSC, is responsible for the assessment of all primates. According to the most recent assessment, 63% of the world’s primates are currently threatened (Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable), and the remaining are classified as Near Threatened (5%) or Least Concern (31%). Having recently celebr… Show more

“…They also play important roles in many aspects of human societies (culture, religion, livelihood), and are key for our understanding of human evolution, biology and behavior [7]. Nevertheless, many primates are threatened with extinction (63%) [8], with the primary threats being habitat loss, pet-trade, and bushmeat hunting [7,9]. Mexico is the northernmost distribution for New World primates with two of their native species Alouatta pigra and Ateles geoffroyi categorized as 'Endangered' by the IUCN [10].…”

“…Plecturocebus (=Callicebus) ornatus (Gray 1866) is a primate species that typically inhabits tropical forests (Carretero-Pinzon and Defler, 2016), and is categorized as Vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List of Species, because of the continuous decline of its habitat due to deforestation (Cotton et al, 2016). This species is endemic of the Easter Plains of Colombia, mainly the Meta department (Defler, 2010).…”

“…Platyrrhines, referred as New World monkeys (NWM), naturally occurring in central and southern American tropical and subtropical regions and catarrhines (Cercopithecoidea and Hominoidea), referred as Old World monkeys (OWM), coming from tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of Asia and Africa 2 . Many primate species are endangered 3 and they must be protected. The conservation of threatened species is a complex and demanding process consisting of elaborated breeding programs and providing of habitat sanctuaries in captive or semi-captive centres, e.g.…”
