Ivan Paslavskyi: vicissitudes of life, editorial and journalistic activity

Abstract

Till now, one segment of the history of Ukrainian print journalism of the 19th and 20th c. remains insufficiently researched. This is the Ukrainian press published in China in 1917–1944s. The people who participated in its creation and functioning are undeservedly forgotten, and their significant role in the evolution of this national social institution is underappreciated. That is why the figure of one of the active participants of Ukrainian national life in East Asia – Ivan Paslavskyi – was chosen as the object of our research. Particular attention is paid to the research of his cooperation with the Ukrainian press, which in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century published in Harbin. Information as to particular episodes of I. Paslavskyi’s life path is specified. An attempt is made to identifying those fragments of the biography that require further research. The author explores I. Paslavskyi’s participation in the founding, publishing, and editing of such periodicals as Dalekyi Skhid [Far East] (1925–1926), Mandzhurskyi Vistnyk [Manchurian Herald] (1932–1937), Ukrainske Zhyttia [Ukrainian Life] (1925), Ukrainski “Lysty z Dalekoho Skhodu” [Ukrainian “Letters from the Far East”] (1932). It is accented to his participation in the functioning of the page Ukrainskaia Zhizn [Ukrainian Life] (1929–1930) in the Russian language newspaper Gung-Bao. More than forty publications by I. Paslavskyi were found in those periodical presses and in the newspaper Dalekyi Skhid [Far East] (1938–1939). It is noted that he signed the publications in the press by his real name, pseudonyms I. P., Lev Halytskyi, L. Halytskyi or remained anonymous. This paper presents a review of the main problematic areas of his journalistic heritage. The emphasis is on the necessity to continue scientific research to clarify controversial fragments of I. Paslavskyi’s biography and his activities as a journalist. The prospects of scientific research devoted to the study of the Ukrainian press in China 1917–1944s and the persons who participated in its functioning are outlined.
