“…Several studies have compared the relative abundance of ticks among specific habitats, terrains, or residential sites (Carey et al 1980, Stafford et al 1998, Stafford and Magnarelli 1993, or reported tick prevalence on domestic and wild mammals, or characterized the species of ticks found naturally attached to a wide range of hosts including humans (Anderson and Magnarelli 1980, Barker et al 2004, Carey et al 1980, Falco and Fish 1988, Felz et al 1996, Foley et al 1999, Goddard 1989, Greiner et al 1984, Hall et al 1991, Koch 1982, Kollars and Ladine 1999. These studies, however, covered small geographic areas and used a wide variety of techniques to measure tick abundance.…”

“…Mapping distribution based on direct field observations, however, is time consuming and requires large-scale organization (Daniel and Dusbabek 1994). Limited areas are studied using techniques such as flagging, walking, trapping, and collecting from several wild and domestic hosts including humans, to report tick abundance (Anderson and Magnarelli 1980, Barker et al 2004, Carey et al 1980, Falco and Fish 1988, Felz et al 1996, Foley et al 1999, Goddard 1989, Greiner et al 1984, Hall et al 1991, Kollars and Ladine 1999, Stafford et al 1998, Koch 1982, Stafford and Magnarelli 1993. Because of the diversity in measurement techniques, the findings from published reports cannot always be directly compared across the nation.…”

“…There have been several surveys on wild pig parasites (Coombs and Springer, 1974;Foreyt et al, 1975;Prestwood et al, 1975;Smith et al, 1982;Greiner et al, 1984;Pence et al, 1988), but only a few studies on wild pig blood biochemistry (Williamson and Pelton, 1975;Wolkers et al, 1993Wolkers et al, , 1994b. Except for some information on packed cell volume (PCV) and hemoglobin concentration (HB), there are no known values reported for whole blood parameters from feral pigs.…”

“…Tick surveys in Georgia (Hanson and Karstad 1959) and Florida (Greiner et al 1984;Allan et al 2001) Amblyommma mixtum and A. tenellum are reported by these names on feral swine here for the first time, but previously, these two species names were treated as synonyms of A. cajennense until their recent resurrections (Nava et al 2014 a, b). Geographically, both species occur in the U.S.A. only in South Texas, and the range of each also includes much of east-central Mexico, but A. mixtum further occupies southern Mexico, all of Central America, and northeastern coastal South America as far south as Ecuador (Estrada-Peña et al 2014;Rivera-Páez et al 2016), whereas the singular, disjunct, and southern-most record for A. tenellum is from Honduras (Becklund 1959).…”
