Abstract

The April issue of Wiadomości Statystyczne. The Polish Statistician consists of three peer-reviewed articles and other studies.In the work entitled Varying measurement of women's fertility depending on different estimates of a population, Elżbieta Gołata, PhD, DSc, ProfTit, discusses the results of female fertility measurement in Poland performed for the country's population defined in two ways: according to the national definition of population and according to the resident population definition. The author also examines the variability of the phenomenon depending on women's age and region. The calculations are based on data referring to the year 2021 (considering the changes in fertility starting from the 1945 generation) provided by Statistics Poland and Eurostat, including the results of the National Population and Housing Census 2021, and data from the Human Fertility Database. The research uses cross-sectional and longitudinal demographic, period and cohort methods of analysis. The study shows that female fertility has significantly declined among the younger generations -most considerably in the 35-39 age group. Moreover, the value of the female fertility rate in Poland calculated for the population according to the national definition proved lower than the value calculated for the resident population.Tomasz Banasik, PhD, presents an Assessment of the relationship between the development of the leasing industry and economic growth in Poland. The study is based on data from Statistics Poland and the Polish Leasing Association for the years 2010-2021. The author uses GDP per capita time series and the actual net values per capita of leasing contracts as measures of economic growth and the activity of the leasing industry, respectively. He concludes that the results of the cointegration analysis and the error correction mechanism indicate the existence of a significant long-lasting relationship between the development of the leasing industry and economic growth in Poland. However, the author recommends further research in this area, especially one considering the ongoing socio-economic changes.The paper by Marcin Pełka, PhD, DSc, Professor at the Wrocław University of Economics and Business, and Professor Antonio Irpino, entitled The application of multidimensional scaling of data to determining changes in retailer customers' preferences aims to indicate which approach in the framework of multidimensional scaling (the scaling of classical data, symbolic interval data or symbolic histogram data) is most relevant when identifying changes in the preferences of shoppers. The authors analyse the changes that took place in the beauty market during the COVID-19 pandemic. They use data on orders for makeup products of one of the Polish cosmetics producers placed by 18 small health and beauty retailers in Lower Silesia in 2019-2021.
